Human Resources Jobs
What is human resources?
In short, human resources is all about maximising efficiency, and hence the profitability of the business, by minimising inefficient practices and activities and keeping the firm away from financial risk. "HR", as a popularly defined term, deals with several overlapping areas affecting every facet of the business. A lot of this work is highly administrative in practice, such as dealing with contracts, employee sick and maternal leave, redundancy, holidays, work scheduling, etc. The other side of the coin is in recognising the needs of the workforce and in providing support - for example with regards to conflict resolution, equal opportunities to the disabled and in responding to morale problems.
Human resources careers
The human resources industry is competitive, so graduates coming out of university with degrees in human resource management may put themselves ahead of others. At the same time, experience is still crucial, which is why most people with careers in human resources started at the bottom, working their way up from a broad role as an HR administrator into a more senior role, such as HR manager, where they have an opportunity to specialise in a specific department, such as recruitment or payroll or contracts.
